Which Side Are You On?

“Which Side Are You On?” was written in 1931 by activist Florence Reece, wife of a union organizer for the United Mine Workers in Harlan County, Kentucky. The melody came from a traditional Baptist hymn. Florence Reece wrote the lyrics after a sheriff, illegally hired by the mining company, terrorized her and her children in their home during what became known as the Harlan County War.
